Commodore rising senior Will Gordon won two matches on Thursday at the U.S. Amateur at legendary Pebble Beach Golf Links and advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament, which will take place on Friday. Gordon knocked off Zheng Kai Bai of China, 3 & 2, in the round of 32, and defeated William Mouw, 2-up, in the round of 16.
Gordon becomes the second Commodore in the last two years to make the quarterfinals; Theo Humphrey advanced to the semifinals at Riviera Country Club in 2017.
Like he did in the first round of match play Wednesday, Gordon put his foot on the gas late in his round-of-32 match, taking an all-square match on the 10th hole and turning it into a 3 & 2 victory after winning three of the last six holes.
Gordon captured his round-of-16 match against William Mouw by outlasting the 17-year old in a back-and-forth affair Thursday afternoon. Mouw took a 2-up lead after eight holes, but Gordon won holes nine and 10 to square the match, and then took a 1-up lead after birdieing the par-three, 204-yard 12th. Mouw won the 15th to square the match again, but Gordon finished his round strong once again, winning the 17th and 18th holes to claim the match, 2-up.
Gordon will take on Isaiah Salinda, who plays at Stanford, in the quarterfinals Friday afternoon at 4:45 CT. Coverage of the quarterfinals begins on FS1 at 6 p.m. CT.
Augenstein, Ott drop round of 32 matches
Junior John Augenstein fell to McClure Meissner, 2 & 1, and Harrison Ott dropped his round of 32 match to Viktor Hovland, 2 & 1.
Snedeker shoots a 59 at Wyndham Championship
Former Commodore star Brandt Snedeker became the ninth player in PGA Tour history to shoot a 59, and the first to shoot a 59 with a bogey on his card, which happened on his first hole, number 10, at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C.
“To know what you’re trying to do and step up and have a 20-footer (on the final hole) and know what it means, I was very aware of what was going on, and to knock that putt in was really special,” Snedeker told PGATour.com. “To know I’m a part of a small club on TOUR and not very many people have done this, really cool feeling right now.”
