Vanderbilt attacker Emily Mathewson became the eighth Commodore to receive a conference honor through the season’s first eight weeks on Tuesday, when she was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the second time this season.
The sophomore from Garnet Valley, Pa., scored 11 points in two games this week, posting two goals and a career-high four assists in VU’s 17-12 loss to Oregon on Wednesday before notching four goals and an assist in the Dores’ 15-11 win over Villanova on Sunday. Mathewson also earned eight draw controls, four ground balls and two caused turnovers on the week.
“She’s just so talented,” Vanderbilt head coach Cathy Swezey said. “She’s a great finisher, she has a great eye for when people are open and she just knows how to find people.”
Mathewson has registered eight assists in her past three games, doubling her season total to 16 helpers through 11 contests. The sophomore has set personal-bests with 37 goals, 16 assists and 53 points this season, leading the Commodores in both points and assists.
“She was so exhausted at the end of the game [Wednesday vs. Oregon] because of how hard she works between the 30s,” Swezey said. “A lot of attackers are criticized for maybe wanting to make the pretty plays and get the goals, but that’s just not her makeup. She’ll do whatever we ask of her and she works very hard, so we appreciate her.”
Mathewson is third in the BIG EAST and 20th nationally with 4.82 points per game. She leads the league and is 11th in Division I with 1.36 free position goals per game, and is the only player in the BIG EAST averaging more than one eight-meter goal per contest, scoring 15 free position goals in 11 games.
The Commodores conclude a three-game homestand Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. with a BIG EAST matchup against Cincinnati at the VU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex. The first 200 fans receive a pair of Vanderbilt Crew Socks.
