Oct. 11, 2014

It wasn’t easy, but Vanderbilt posted a victory on homecoming night.

With freshman Johnny McCrary throwing for 169 yards and a touchdown, the Commodores downed Charleston Southern, 21-20, on Saturday night.

McCrary came off the bench to replace fellow freshman Wade Freebeck in the first half and quickly hooked up with C.J. Duncan on a 65-yard touchdown pass to give Vanderbilt a 10-3 lead, and the Commodores stayed in front the rest of the way. McCrary finished 10-of-16 with one touchdown and one interception for the Commodores (2-5), who led 21-10 at the half.

Charleston Southern scored a touchdown in the third quarter and then cut Vanderbilt’s lead to 21-20 on a field goal with 3:17 to play in the game. But Vanderbilt was able to run out the clock on its ensuing possession to preserve the win.

Ralph Webb rushed for 56 yards on 15 carries for Vanderbilt.
