No. 16/19 Commodores come up short against No. 10/11 Gamecocks

Jan. 26, 2014

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Despite 23 points from senior Christina Foggie, No. 16/19 Vanderbilt couldn’t topple No. 10/11 South Carolina, losing 61-57 on Sunday at Memorial Gymnasium.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Commodores (16-4, 5-2 SEC), who had won 13 of 14. The Gamecocks (18-2, 6-1) also snapped Vanderbilt’s eight-game home winning streak and swept the season series.

Vanderbilt led just once, early in the second half, and tied the game eight times. A pair of free throws by Marqu’es Webb knotted the game up one last time, 55-55, with 1:20 left. But South Carolina guard Tiffany Mitchell answered with four straight points, including a steal and score with 32 seconds left, for a 59-55 lead to all but put the game away.

More to come later.
