READING, PA—There were plenty of positives for Vanderbilt’s bowling team as it cruised through the first day of the Kutztown Invitational with a perfect 6-0 record.
The Commodores racked up big pin counts in the process and enter tomorrow’s team game session in second place among the 28 participating teams, just two pins behind leader Wisconsin-Whitewater.
In the first five victories, Vanderbilt shuffled in a variety of lineups as everyone got into the action. There was an emphasis on left-handers and at one time the `Dores were using right-handed freshman Giselle Poss with four southpaws – Nicole Powell, Rebeca Reguero, Amanda Fry and Natalie Goodman.
“The left side was open,” said Coach John Williamson, “and we did our best to take what the lanes were giving us. The right side was touchy, a lot tighter, and we were very pleased with how our left-handers performed. I thought Natalie had a real good look and she executed very well despite being in a place (anchor) that she hasn’t been in too often. And Rebeca gained confidence early and did a very good job all day.”
It was the win in the day’s finale with host Kutztown that Williamson found a key that could become a significant milestone.
“In the first game (4-game Baker sets) we were trailing when we closed with five strikes in a row from Robyn (Renslow), Rebeca and Natalie to pull within just one pin, 215-214. That was special; in some past games when we would get pushed we might not respond but today we responded like champions. We won the second game by a narrow margin and then blew it open in the third game.”
The victories came over Mount Aloysius, St. Francis (NY), Penn State-Altoona, Pittsburgh-Bradford, Long Island University and Kutztown.
