Newman makes it to singles Southern Intercollegiate division finals

After Division III singles action on Saturday and Sunday, Newman is to play in the Southern Intercollegiate Division III singles finals tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m..

The five-star recruit defeated Jake Bouchillon out of Kennesaw 6-3, 6-4 Saturday morning. Saturday evening; same story, different opponent as Navy’s Austin Jones was defeated 6-2, 6-4. Sunday afternoon the talented young freshman took on College of Charleston’s Franz Sydow. The Cougar’s singles player defeated opponents from tennis powerhouse Clemson University and Florida Atlantic to advance to tournament semifinals. Newman and Sydow competed this afternoon with Vanderbilt coming out on top in the, 6-2, 6-1.

Newman is scheduled to take on Clemson University’s Christian Harris tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. on court six of the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in the tournament finals. Harris, a freshman out of Hilton Head Island, S.C. was a 2011 ITF Kentucky Derby singles and doubles quarterfinalist as well as the winner of the USTA Tennessee Boy’s 2009 Sportsmanship of the Year award

In Saturday’s Division I singles action Vanderbilt’s Kris Yee went down swinging as the junior had two very hard fought matches against Kentucky’s 12th seeded Kevin Lai and Oklahoma’s Nick Papac. Yee defeated Lai, who is currently ranked No. 102 in singles by the ITA, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3. The Commodore went on to face Papac later that day with a contest that went into a tiebreaker; Papac ultimately defeating Yee, 5-7, 7-6 (8) in the round of 16.

In the Division I doubles department, Newman and partner Ryan Smith defeated Georgia’s Peter Bertran and Nick wood in a close 8-6 match on Saturday. This afternoon the duo took on the highly seeded team of Jordan Cox and Luke Morland, who were the seventh seed out of Georgia Gwinnett College. However, the tandem were not enough for the `Dores as they took the match and the opponents chances at the semifinals in an 8-1 victory.

The Commodores doubles team takes on the fifth seeded team of Andrew Dromsky and Igor Smelyanski out of archrival Tennessee. The match is scheduled for tomorrow at noon on court two of the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
