National Player of the Week

Diego Pavia receives honor from Walter Camp Football Foundation

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia has been honored for a second day in a row after it was announced Tuesday that he has been selected the Walter Camp Football Foundation National FBS Offensive Player of the Week. The recognition comes after the Commodore quarterback was named to the Davey O’Brien Award’s Great 8 and a Manning Award Star of the Week on Monday.

Pavia is the first-ever Dore from the offensive side of the ball to be chosen National Offensive Player of the Week by Walter Camp, and the first individual from the program to be honored by the organization since Zach Cunningham was named the National Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 15, 2016.

In the Commodores’ 55-35 victory over Utah State last weekend, he finished 26-of-34 passing for 321 yards and a school-record-tying five touchdowns to go along with 79 yards and a touchdown rushing to post 400 yards of total offense. Pavia—who hails from Albuquerque, New Mexico— became the only Vandy player since the beginning of the 1996 season to account for six touchdowns against an NCAA FBS opponent.

With the effort, Pavia now ranks sixth on the program’s career record list with 33 touchdown passes.

In addition to helping the Dores open the season 5-0 for the first time since 2008, he has led an offense that has scored 50-plus points in each of the last two outings and 30 or more in all five contests this fall, the first time Vandy has accomplished both feats since the 1915 campaign.

Pavia and No. 16/17 Vanderbilt will travel to play nationally-ranked Alabama on Saturday, with the matchup slated to kick off on ABC at 2:30 p.m. in Tuscaloosa.
