Multiple Dores Moving On

Men's tennis sends six to Regionals round of 32

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Vanderbilt men’s tennis team advanced six Commodores past the opening round of the main draw across singles and doubles play at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships hosted by Purdue.

Junior Hugo Coquelin and No. 84 ranked sophomore Pablo Martinez Gomez, the event’s No. 4 seed, highlighted singles play for the black and gold with dominant wins on Friday. Coquelin quickly downed Lipscomb’s Henrique Ushizima 6-2, 6-3 while Martinez Gomez stifled Nuno Pinheiro of Eastern Kentucky 6-1, 6-3. Junior Danil Panarin, No. 46 in the ITA singles rankings and No. 2 seed, also notched a two-set win for Vanderbilt, moving past Butler’s Riccardo Baldi 7-5, 6-2.

The Dores split doubles results and have two pairs moving on to the round of 32. Coquelin and freshman Jack Satterfield opened the day for Vandy in a crosstown matchup against Belmont’s Eli Mizerski and Morgan Woodson. The Dores knocked off their Bruin counterparts 8-3 in their first match together as a doubles pairing. Senior Tighe Brunetti and freshman Cayden Wang, who each fell short of advancing to the singles main draw yesterday, picked up the other doubles victory on Friday for the black and gold. Taking on Zackary Kimelman and Jeremy Milette from Ball State, the Dore duo held on for an 8-6 win to stay alive in the doubles draw.

Vanderbilt’s doubles pairings again kick off the action tomorrow from West Lafayette. Coquelin and Satterfield are slated for a matchup with No. 51 ranked and No. 1 seed Walid Ahouda and Hamza El Amine of Louisville while Brunetti and Wang will face the No. 12 seed of Chattanooga’s Cortland Grove and Jakub Jupa; both matches are set to begin at 8 a.m. In singles, Coquelin goes up against Nick Herdoiza of Xavier and Martinez Gomez squares up versus Juan David Velasquez of Purdue at 9:45 a.m. following doubles. Panarin will begin play at 11 a.m. against Indiana’s Michael Andre. The full tournament page for the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships is available online.
