ATHENS, Ga. – Vanderbilt’s men’s tennis team wrapped up play at its first tournament of the fall on Sunday at the Southern Intercollegiates. Vanderbilt closed the tournament on a high note, winning two of their three matches on the final day.
Earning victories were junior Vijay Paul and freshman Charlie Jones. Paul won his match in the second and final round of the Division I Consolation bracket, while Jones picked up a win in the second and final round of the Division II Consolation bracket.
Heading into the day, freshman Alex DiValerio was the only Commodore that remained in the winner’s bracket. After earning two victories on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Division II bracket, DiValerio was upended by Wake Forest’s Jon Wolff, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-2) on Sunday.
Paul earned a hard-fought win over Duke’s Dylan Arnould, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7). Jones’ win came by the score of 6-1, 6-4 over Mike Anders of Charlotte. Both Paul and Jones won their final two matches after losing first-round matches.
On Saturday, the Commodores got victories from Jones, Paul and DiValerio, who earned wins in the round of 32 and 16. In doubles play, Vanderbilt’s duo of Paul and DiValerio advanced to the round of 16 in the Division II bracket with an 8-2 win over Andrew Suesserman and Dylan Higgins of Kennesaw State.
The Commodores will return to the courts Oct. 3-5 at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta.
