Morris, Smith, Tant Agree to Free Agent Deals 4/24/2005 Three Commodores – Dominique Morris, Brandon Smith and Matthew Tant – agreed to free agent deals with NFL clubs shortly after the draft concluded. Morris, a three-year starter at cornerback from Nashville, agreed to terms with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Smith, a senior wide receiver from New Orleans, signed with the New York Giants. Tant, a three-year starter at fullback from Pegram, Tenn., will try to win a roster spot with the San Diego Chargers. The trio, along with sixth round draftees Justin Geisinger and Jovan Haye, are expected to report for rookie camp with their respective teams on Thursday. Morris, a two-time defensive back MVP recipient for the Commodores, topped the Southeastern Conference last year with four fumble recoveries and ranked among the league leaders with three forced fumbles. In 2004, he set a career single-season high with 58 tackles. “I knew they (Tampa Bay) were interested because we had been talking. I thought they might draft me in the final round, but I’m happy with the way it worked out,” Morris said. “Tampa Bay didn’t use any of their picks on cornerbacks, so I think that helps my chances.” Smith, the team’s leading receiver in 2004, ranked among the SEC’s Top 10 in catches and finished his career with a 160-yard effort versus Tennessee. He agreed to the Giants’ deal after impressing numerous pro scouts at a pair of postseason workouts. “I was a little down at the end of the draft, but I feel great right now. It’s very satisfying,” Smith said. “I’m getting my wish, to get in somebody’s camp and show them what I can do.” As the draft ended, Tant was in communication with the Chargers’ coaching staff. A three-year starter who scored nine career touchdowns as a Commodore, Tant is excited about the opportunity to make a professional roster. “Minutes after the draft, I was talking to the Chargers and getting excited about being in their camp. They have one of the best fullbacks in Lorenzo Neal, and also have one other on their roster. But I think they are looking to groom another fullback,” Tant said. “When I get there, I’m going to show them I’m willing to do whatever is necessary, including special teams.” |
