GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The fifth-ranked Vanderbilt men’s golf team is in fifth place after 36 holes of the SunTrust Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., with a total of 583 (293-290) in their first spring tournament of the 2015 season. Senior Hunter Stewart paced the Commodore effort on Saturday, posting an even-par, 140 (68-72), which puts him in a tie for ninth on the individual leader board heading into the final round on Sunday.

“We certainly didn’t play to our standards today and didn’t make very good adjustments, which was disappointing,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “However, we know it’s a long season and we need to take the right steps so we can be better tomorrow than we were today.”

Sophomore Matthias Schwab, participating in his first tournament since last spring, was the Commodores’ second-best finisher of the day Saturday, carding a six-over par, 146 (76-70, T-23). Other scores included Ben Fogler’s 149 (75-74, T-38), a 150 (74-76, T-48) from Theo Humphrey, and a 153 (79-74, T-60) from Carson Jacobs.

South Florida is the second-round leader after carding a 36-hole team score of 558 (275-283), which is two shots better than Arkansas.

Individually, Stewart trails leaders Kolton Crawford of Arkansas, Martin Rohwer of UAB, and JD Tomlinson of Florida by three shots. All three of the leaders have a score of three-under, 137.

The third and final round of the tournament begins on Sunday morning from the Mark Bostick Golf Course.
