The lists of firsts for the Vanderbilt men’s golf team continues, with the Commodores being named the number one team in the nation by the Golf Coaches Association of America at the end of the fall season, the first time ever that Vanderbilt has been atop the coaches poll.
The Commodores moved to number one in mid-October in the Golfstat.com rankings and at the end of the East Lake Cup according to Golfweek.com. The move atop the coaches poll caps a stellar fall for the Commodores, which included a win at the Nike Collegiate Invitational and the stroke play portion of the East Lake Cup, and a runner-up finish at the Tavistock Collegiate.
Men’s golf joins three other Commodore teams in reaching number one during the regular season. The women’s basketball team was number one in 1993, the Commodore baseball team has been ranked number one in four different seasons (2007, 2011, 2013, and 2015), and the women’s bowling team, who was at the top of the polls at various times in 2008 and 2009.
The Commodores will put down their clubs for a few months before the spring season begins February 17-19, 2017, at the All-American Intercollegiate in Houston, Texas.
