Knoxville, Tenn. – The Commodore men’s tennis team wrapped up day two of the ITA Regional tournament with one doubles duo headed to the Round of 16 and two players advancing to the Round of 16 in singles play.
Vanderbilt opened the day up with the Round of 32 in doubles play with No. 1-seeded doubles pair Cameron Klinger and Billy Rowe taking down Purdue’s Sochurel/Julio, 8-7 (4). This victory advances the duo to the Round of 16 set to take place Saturday in Knoxville.
Moving into singles play, eight dores competed for a chance at advancing to the Round of 32. Freshman Marcus Ferreira, sophomore Max Freeman, juniors Billy Rowe and Panu Virtanen and senior Cameron Klinger all conquered victories for the Dores earning themselves spots in the singles Round of 32.
Ferreira competed against Wallart (Kentucky) in an SEC matchup, ultimately falling short in the first set, 2-6. Bouncing back in the second set, Ferreira dominated the court in a 6-3 victory leading the match into a third set. That’s where Ferreira stepped up to earn a 6-1 win.
The senior Klinger took on fellow Tennessean Chaw from Lipscomb, opening the match up with a 6-3 defeat. Coming off a first-set victory, Klinger moved onto the second set to defeat Chaw in a shutout win, 6-0.
Klinger and Ferreira compete Saturday morning in the singles Round of 16. Klinger will take the court against Middle Tennessee State’s No. 14 seed Morell while Ferreira fights for a chance at the quarterfinals against East Tennessee State’s No. 13 seed Fontchberta.
