NASHVILLE – The Vanderbilt men’s tennis team had a strong start to the 2018 fall tournament season Friday morning hosting the Commodore Scramble.
Opening up with doubles play, the Dores left the court with three strong wins against opponents from Belmont and Furman University. One of these wins left freshman Jack Lee with his first collegiate win playing alongside partner Joan Valy from Belmont University.
In singles action, matches were conducted on 16 courts including the indoor facility where the Dores went undefeated dominating the field. Four Commodores competed indoors including George Harwell, Alex Ross, Billy Rowe and freshman, Marcus Ferriera.
“It’s been about a couple of months since I played in my last tournament,” said Ferreira. “It was a little difficult adjusting to indoors since we’ve been practicing outdoors so it took me a few minutes then I just got into my groove and it felt good.”
Overall, the Dores went 7-2 in singles play and are looking to continue this success on Saturday, when they compete in the second round of singles play.
Double tandems George Harwell and Maxwell Freeman as well as Billy Rowe and Panu Virtanen will advance to the third round of doubles play where they will compete to make it to the championship round on Sunday.
The Commodore Scramble will start back up tomorrow morning with the first serve at 9 a.m. CT. The morning session will include the second round of singles followed by the third round of doubles. In the afternoon, the Commodores will compete in the third round of singles with hopes of advancing to the championships.
