Chattanooga, Tenn. — Juniors Matt Lockin and Scott Brown of the Vanderbilt men’s tennis team will be in action on Thursday, Oct. 9, in the main draw of the 2003 Men’s ITA All-American Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn. Lockin, ranked No. 35 in the country, was seeded through the qualifying rounds into the main draw, while No. 73 Brown earned his way in by winning a pair of matches in the qualifying tournament.

Lockin won the main draw of the 2003 Southern Intercollegiate Championships last month, and will be looking to keep his hot streak alive. His first match will be against No. 23 K.C. Corkery of Stanford at 9:30 a.m. CT Thursday.

In the qualifying draw, Brown started off by defeating No. 96 Jeff Kader of the College of William & Mary, 6-3, 6-4, on Tuesday. Brown then went on to beat Peter Stroer of Texas in a tough, three-set encounter. Stroer took the first set of that match, 6-0, but Brown fought back, taking the second set, 6-4, and eventually winning the third set in a tiebreaker, 9-7, after trailing five-games-to-one. He will face No. 21 William Barker of Rice at 8 a.m. CT in Thursday’s Round of 64.

Two rounds are scheduled to be played on Thursday, with the Round of 16 following on Friday. The quarter- and semifinals both will be contested on Saturday, followed by Sunday’s championship.

The All-American is the largest single tournament of the season in collegiate tennis, with over 300 competitors. It is also the first of three national championship events at the Division I level during the 2003-04 collegiate tennis season (the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the season-ending NCAA Championships in May are the other two).
