Men’s Tennis to Compete in SEC Indoors 1/19/2006 The Vanderbilt men’s tennis team is headed north to the SEC Indoor Championships in Lexington, Kentucky. The individual tournament is a prelude to the 2006 dual match season, which will begin Saturday, January 28 against UT-Martin. “This should be really interesting,” VU Head Coach Ian Duvenhage said. “This is the first SEC Indoors I’ve gone to in a long time. I’m looking forward to see how we stack up to our competition.” All SEC schools, with the exception of Arkansas, will be participating in the event. Georgia currently boasts two top 15 singles players, sophomore John Isner, ranked No. 2 in the nation, and junior Strahinja Bobusic, ranked 12th. Georgia was picked first in the SEC in the 2006 preseason coaches poll. The SEC tournament will also feature four other schools ranked in the ITA’s top 10. Florida (2nd), Georgia (3rd), Ole Miss (6th), and LSU (10th). “I’d like to see us play like we’re capable of playing. Everyone that comes wants to win. But I’m okay if we don’t win, as long as we play up to our own ability,” Duvenhage said. In 2005 the Commodores fell early in the competition with No. 1 singles player Scott Brown dropping his first match to Ricardo Gonzales of Georgia. Fellow senior Matt Lockin also dropped out in the first round of the tournament to Mark Growcott of LSU. SEC Indoors will begin Friday, January 20 and run throughout the weekend. |
