NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 45 Vanderbilt men’s tennis team went 2-0 in the squad’s first doubleheader of the weekend. The ‘Dores swept both of Friday’s competitions going 7-0 against Murray state and 4-0 against Belmont.
With the two victories, Vanderbilt now owns a 7-4 record in the dual season.
Vandy captured the doubles points in both matches; with courts one and three ending the day with perfect records. Baker Newman and Tate Allwardt fell at No. 2 in a tough tiebreaker against the Bruins, 7-6(5).
In singles, two freshmen in the Commodore lineup took both of their matches in two sets; Cameron Klinger at No. 2 and No. 3 Alex Ross at No. 4 and six.
Against the Racers, Pen Binet and Allwardt had strong performances at the bottom portion of the lineup with both student-athletes sweeping both sets 6-0, 6-0. Kris Yee clinched the Commodore victory over Murray State on three; 6-3, 6-1. Ross’ victory over Belmont on court five was the La Grange, Ill. native’s first career clinch for the ‘Dores.
Vanderbilt continues doubleheader action this Sunday, with a huge match against No. 20 Columbia kicking things off at noon.
“That is a very very important match for us for a number of reasons,” said head coach Ian Duvenhage. “First of all, they’re a really good team in the top-20. We’ve dropped in the rankings, so we really need to get back on track and this match on Sunday is a great opportunity for us.”
Following the match against the Lions, VU will cap off the weekend hosting Sewanee at 4:00 pm.
