KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt men’s tennis team will head to east to Knoxville for the 2013 USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships, beginning on Friday. The tournament will run across five days and feature some of the best players from around the region.
“We’ve put together some great practices going into this weekend,” said VU head coach Ian Duvenhage. “The guys are playing some great tennis right now. This will be a huge opportunity for us, our guys will be playing a lot of really good competition and this will be a great time for us to prove how good we can really be.”
The winner of the doubles main draw and the finalists in the singles main draw will automatically qualify themselves for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in early November.
Singles will be set up in a draw of 128, with the top seeds getting first round byes. Vanderbilt’s Kris Yee, Jeffrey Offerdahl and Anton Kovrigin are all seeded in the singles draw. Yee is the tournaments sixth-seeded singles player, while Offerdahl is one of the ninth-seeded players and Kovrigin, one of the 17th-seeded players. All three players will receive a first round bye.
Three of Vandy’s doubles teams will participate in the tournament this weekend. By virtue of the draw, Ryan Smith and Rhys Johnson will receive a first-round bye. The remaining two doubles teams of Kovrigin and Offerdahl and Yee and Suresh Eswaran will play their opening round matches Friday morning.
On Friday there will be three rounds of doubles followed by only one round of singles play. Doubles will begin at 8:30 in the morning, and the last match of the day is scheduled to be played at 3 p.m.
