Men’s Tennis Hosts Kentucky on Senior Day

4/14/2005

The No. 36 Vanderbilt men’s tennis team welcomes No. 12 Kentucky to the Currey Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Commodores are coming off a week in which they chalked up an impressive 2-1 mark, including wins over both No. 23 MTSU and No. 25 Tennessee.

“The guys are playing confident, as they should be,” said Interim Head Coach Eddie Coates.  “The team is very energetic and you can feel it in our practices and in our matches.  We are pretty fired up right now.”

Both senior and No. 45 Scott Brown and freshman Ryan Preston collected a trio of singles wins against the Blue Raiders, Vols, and Georgia Bulldogs last week, pushing their 2005 singles marks to 16-4.

After clinching the Vanderbilt win on the road at South Carolina, Preston has gone on to claim his last eight contests, including six SEC matches.

The Cats come to town looking for a conference win after dropping their last two SEC decisions to Georgia, 4-3 and Tennessee, 5-2.

Overall, the Wildcats stand in fifth place in the SEC and currently hold a record of 16-8, 5-5 SEC.

The Cats are looking to get to .500 on the road this season in SEC play, owning a 2-3 record with victories at LSU and Arkansas.

In their last meeting, Kentucky knocked off the Commodores in Lexington, 4-3.

“I know the guys remember last year,” said Coates.  “We hope we can return the favor this year.”

The Senior Day matchup with the Wildcats is set for Saturday at 3:00 at the Currey Tennis Center on the Vanderbilt campus.
