The No. 20 Vanderbilt men’s tennis team faced both Belmont and UNC-Greensboro on Saturday and refused to surrender a single set to either foe.

Coach Ken Flach’s squad played as if they had something to prove in the morning matchup with intra-city rival Belmont, cruising through the doubles draw, 8-1, 8-1, and 8-5

In singles action, the nation’s 17th ranked player, Commodore senior Scott Brown, made quick work of Belmont sophomore Alex Gillott in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.

Freshman Jason Pinsky would chalk up the third Commodore point of the morning, dusting off Belmont’s Fausto Rocha to the tune of 6-1, 6-2.

The rest of the talented Commodore lineup would soon follow suit, with Matt Lockin, Nathan Sachs, Andy Mack, and Ryan Preston all picking up victories for the Commodores.

Vanderbilt freshmen Pinsky and Preston allowed their opponents a mere six total games in their first collegiate dual match.

“Everyone played well, and I am very pleased,” said Flach. “We are further along than I thought we would be in match play.”

In afternoon festivities, the Commodores clashed with the Spartans of UNC Greensboro.

Vanderbilt would shuffle the lineup in the matinee with the Spartans, but would achieve the desired result.

The Dores once again got the job done in the doubles draw, taking each match and only giving Greensboro a total of three games.

At the No. 1 position, the 39th ranked combination of Scott Brown and Jason Pinsky got their second win of the season over the Spartans Mark Ladouceur and Greg Levy, 8-2.

Vanderbilt’s Ryan Preston would team with Andy Mack for their 8-1 lashing of Jason Steinhorn and Daniel Bustamante, while Matt Lockin and Jordan Magarik finished off the Spartans with an impressive 8-3 tally.

The Dores would make quick work of the Spartans in the singles draw, surrendering a total of just 21 games.

The Commodore freshmen made their mark again afternoon singles draw, handing their Spartan counterparts straight set defeats, while yielding just a single game between the two.

Commodore seniors Brown and Lockin would also finish their opponents in straight sets, with Brown winning 6-2, 6-4 and Lockin besting Ladouceur 6-2, 6-3.

“We are right where we want to be,” said Flach. “I think we can surprise some people this year.”

The Commodores look for their third win tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m., when they return to action at the Currey Tennis Center. The Dores are set to face the Mocs of Chattanooga.
