4/16/2006 LEXINGTON, Ky. — The No. 72 Commodores were two games away from taking their third SEC victory, but fell 4-3 to No. 30 Kentucky in Lexington. The match boiled down to Vanderbilt’s Ryan Preston and UK’s Alex Hume at No. 1. Preston took a 6-3 first set win but dropped the second set 5-7. Preston broke Hume to tie the match at 5-5 in the third, with Preston up 30-0. “He should have won it right there and he knows it,” VU Head Coach Ian Duvenhage said. “But I think maybe he got too nervous or wanted it too much. He backed off and Hume broke the serve.” The Commodores started the match by taking doubles wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Nik Cromydas and Nathan Sachs downed UK’s Agostinelli/Hodge 8-4, taking their third consecutive SEC doubles win. Jordan Magarik took Vanderbilt’s only straight set win of the afternoon, against Greg Anderson (6-2, 6-4). Nathan Sachs notched the other Commodore singles win, snapping his five-game losing streak. Sachs defeated Wildcat Carey Rubin 6-4 in the first set, but dropped the second set 4-6. The win tied the match at 3-3. “Nathan played really well in the first set. He got a little nervous and double faulted to loose the second set. He was down in the third, but he fought his way out,” Duvenhage said. Evan Dufaux played his first third set since his 6-4, 2-6, 3-6 loss to Mississippi State’s Ivan Bjelica in March. After falling 3-6 to Nate Emerge in the first set, Dufaux fought back to take the second set 6-3, but fell 3- “Overall, it really was a great match,” Duvenhage said. “It was a heartbreaker to loose, because we had it.” The SEC tournament brackets will be announced on Sunday night. The tournament will begin Thursday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Results |
