Men's Golf travels to Border Olympics

March 12, 2009

LAREDO, Texas — Just five days after claiming victory at the 2009 Seminole Intercollegiate, the Vanderbilt men’s golf team travels to the Laredo Country Club for the Border Olympics, hosted by the University of Houston.

No one could blame VU Head Coach Tom Shaw for fielding the same five-man team for this weekend’s event. All five Commodores contributed to the team’s win last week in Tallahassee, Fla.

Sophomore Ryan Haselden won his first collegiate event with a three-day total of 3-under. Haselden’s 67 on the first day of the event matched the lowest round of the tournament. Senior Jon Curran placed in the tournament’s top three after closing with a final round of 68.

Junior Hudson Johnson also finished strong, carding a two-under 70 in Sunday’s final round. Senior Tyler Matthews highlighted day two for Vanderbilt with a four-under 68. Freshman Trey DelGreco was one of two Commodores to eagle on the 54th hole as Vanderbilt rallied to win the tournament.

A total of 16 teams will take on the par-72, 7125-yard layout at Laredo. The two-day event gets under way with 36 holes on Friday before wrapping up with the final 18 on Saturday morning. Complete results will be available online at uhcougars.com at the conclusion of each round.
