PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team opens its 2007 spring slate at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational, hosted by the University of North Florida at the Sawgrass Country Club.

The three-day, 54-hole event features 15 elite collegiate golf teams, and will be played on Sawgrass’ 6910-yard, par-72 layout.

First-year Head Coach Tom Shaw takes two seniors, one junior and two sophomores to the first of five scheduled events that lead up to the 2007 Southeastern Conference Championships in late April.

Senior Luke List headlines Vanderbilt’s lineup. The Ringgold, Ga., native recently won the 2007 Jones Cup Invitational, one of the most prestigious fields in amateur golf. Joining List at Sawgrass are sophomore Jon Curran, junior Billy Whalen, senior Dos Goldsmith and sophomore Tyler Matthews.

Throughout the last 16 years, the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational (formerly the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship) has grown into one of the premier events in college golf, and this year is no exception. Dubbed the first collegiate major of the year, the 2007 field features 10 teams that qualified for NCAA Regional play last year, four of which made the NCAA championship tournament, and three teams ranked in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin top 10.
