Men beat Cougars 4-3

MALIBU, Calif. – Vanderbilt will head to the championship round against No. 12 Pepperdine at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Malibu, California after beating the BYU Cougars 4-3 this afternoon.

The Commodores, who entered the weekend with a 1-0 record and ranked No. 36 in the nation, got a boost from freshmen Gonzales Austin, Joe Dorn, and Jeff Offerdahl, who clinched the win with his split set victory over Francis Sargeant. After dropping his first set, Offerdahl roared back for a 0-6, 6-3, 6-2 decision.

Dorn battled ranked Patrick Kawka in a tiebreaker 7-5, 7-6 (7-5). No. 106 Kawka had a 5-0 advantage in the second set of the tiebreaker before Dorn roared back 7-5.

Senior Charlie Jones won his match in straight sets for the Commodores to round out the scoring in the 4-3 win.

Vanderbilt will play Pepperdine tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. PT/4 p.m. CT.
