Martinez Gomez generated a 3-1 record across singles and doubles play in the two matchups. Against the Sooners, Vandy turned a 3-0 deficit into a 3-3 tie with Martinez Gomez versus No. 79 Oscar Lacides remaining at No. 2 singles. The sophomore Dore posted a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 takedown to clinch the match for the black and gold in Norman. Two days later, Vanderbilt made its way to College Station for a matchup with No. 14 Texas A&M. Along with partner Danil Panarin, Martinez Gomez helped guide the Dores to an early doubles point with a 6-1 defeat of Alex Frusina and Lathan Scrobarcek. The black and gold once more fell behind, 3-2, and it was again Martinez Gomez to give the Commodores a late spark. The sophomore fended off No. 108 Frusina in a rematch, 6-4, 6-4, en route to Vandy’s 4-3 victory.
The wins over No. 79 Lacides and No. 108 Frusina were the first two ranked singles victories of the season for Martinez Gomez. His performance against Oklahoma and Texas A&M delivered Vanderbilt its first back-to-back SEC road wins since 2016. The defeat of the Aggies was the first victory in College Station in program history, and also handed A&M its second consecutive home SEC loss for the first time since joining the conference in 2012.
Vanderbilt vaulted to No. 11 in Tuesday’s ITA rankings, their highest mark since the end of the 2003 season. Martinez Gomez rejoined the rankings at No. 115 in singles after his performance against Oklahoma and Texas A&M. He sits on a three match win streak and moved to 3-1 in SEC play, also producing a singles win against Tennessee.
The Commodores continue their four match road trip in Fayetteville, Arkansas on Friday with a contest against the Razorbacks set for 5:30 p.m. For more information, updates and exclusive match day content, follow the Vanderbilt men’s tennis team, @VandyMTennis, on Instagram and X.
