Martinez Gomez Heads to Semifinals

Sophomore Dore wins fourth straight Regionals match

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Sophomore Pablo Martinez Gomez is the lone Dore remaining after another straight-set win on Sunday at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships hosted by Purdue.

The No. 84 ranked Commodore and No. 4 seed matched up against his toughest competition thus far in No. 10 seeded Walid Ahouda of Louisville. Despite the opponent, Martinez Gomez continued his tournament momentum and took the first set 6-3. He then fully controlled the second, pulling away 6-1 to seal the match and advance into the singles semifinals on Monday. Including last season, Martinez Gomez is a winner of five straight matches, the highest win streak of his career across singles or doubles. He becomes the first to reach the Regionals singles semifinals for Vanderbilt since Daniel Valent in 2017, who went on to win the singles draw.

Martinez Gomez has the chance to avenge junior Hugo Coquelin’s loss as he faces Purdue’s Nour Fathalla, who eliminated Coquelin 6-4, 6-1 on Sunday, tomorrow at 9 a.m. A victory for the Dore gives him a berth into the NCAA Singles Championship Nov. 18-23 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida; each of the two singles finalists from each region secure qualification for the event.
