CARLSBAD, Calif. – The No. 2-ranked Vanderbilt men’s golf team got off to a hot start in Round 2 of the 2024 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship, as the Commodores carded 2-under 286 on Saturday to end the round in third place.
Vanderbilt rode the momentum it created over the final nine holes of play in Round 1 to get off to a hot start in Round 2, as the Commodores sat at 5-under at the turn. The Dores posted the lowest team score on Saturday at 2-under. Vandy, who entered the day tied for 12th, moved up nine spots on the team leaderboard in Round 2 and heads into Sunday in third at 7-over 583.
“It was a solid performance today and I’m proud of the team,” said Vanderbilt men’s golf head coach Scott Limbaugh. “We found some momentum late yesterday and used that to get off to a good start today. It’s the national championship. Energy is high, nerves are high, but you’ve got to focus on what you’ve got to do. I’m super proud of everybody. It was a great team effort today.”
Junior Gordon Sargent went bogey-free in Round 2 of the 2024 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships, finishing a team-best 3-under 69 on Saturday. Sargent made one of the biggest moves up the player leaderboard in Round 2, as he jumped up 56 spots to head into Round 3 in a tie for seventh.
“It was a lot cleaner than yesterday,” said Sargent of his performance in Round 2. “It was definitely tough and everyone’s first time seeing this golf course and figuring out what to expect. I feel like we did a good job as a team last night and we actually had a decent finish yesterday that gave us a little momentum. We kind of kept it rolling today. The golf course is definitely playing tough, but if you attack it the right way, I think there are some birdies out there.”
Junior Jackson Van Paris moved up 18 spots on the player leaderboard after finishing Round 2 at 1-under 71. The Pinehurst, North Carolina, native heads into Sunday tied with Sargent for seventh, as each golfer sits at even par 144 through two rounds.
Senior Cole Sherwood finished at even par 72 in Saturday’s second round. The Austin, Texas, native climbed 36 spots up the leaderboard in Round 2 to finish tied for 27th at 3-over 147. Graduate students William Moll and Matthew Riedel each carded 2-over 74 in Round 2. Riedel heads into Sunday tied for 34th on the player leaderboard with a 36-hole score of 4-over 148, while Moll sits three strokes behind him at 7-over 151.
The Commodores enter Round 3 of the 2024 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships six strokes off the lead, as Virginia sits atop the team leaderboard at 1-over 577. Stanford’s Karl Vilips leads the field after 36 holes of play with a two-round total of 7-under 137.
Round 3 of the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships begins Sunday on the North Course at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa. Vanderbilt tees off at 8:40 a.m. CT from the first tee. “We played better today, but there is still another gear for us,” said Limbaugh. “This week is about toughness and patience. The message for our team heading into tomorrow is to be us and play Vanderbilt golf.”
