AUSTIN, Texas – The Vanderbilt men’s team concluded its final tournament of the season, the Longhorn Invitational, before opening up the 2018 dual season on January 19th.
The Commodores capped their last day in Texas going 3-2 in doubles play and 5-5 in singles.
Ranked 36th in the country, Vandy’s Lachlan McPhee and Billy Rowe earned a swift 8-3 victory over Virginia Tech’s Carlo Donato and Henrik Korsgaa. Maxwell Freeman and Tate Allwardt produced an 8-3 win of their down, downing the Hokies’ George Cartledge and Feliksas Sakalauskas. Panu Virtanen and George Harwell defeated VT’s Chase Bernstine and Abraham Asaba, 8-4.
Against the 5th ranked team in the country, Vanderbilt’s senior pairing of Daniel Valent and Baker Newman nearly pulled off the ranked upset, but fell to Texas’ Rodrigo Banzer and Leonardo Telles, 8-6. John Mee and Colin Marke of UT defeated Adam Sraberg and Alex Ross, 8-4.
Individually, Vikram Chari, Freeman, Harwell, Sraberg and Ross all walked away from day three with singles wins. Ross escaped the weekend unscathed in singles, going 3-0 against Virginia Tech and Texas student-athletes. Ross’ Sunday victory came in three sets against Colin Markes, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
The Commodores officially open the 2018 dual match season this Friday at 2 p.m. The squad hosts Middle Tennessee in the warm confines of the Currey Tennis Center. All regular season tennis matches are free to the public.
