List and Donnell Conclude Their Weekend at the Nationwide Tour’s Chattanooga Classic 5/7/2004
List and Donnell Conclude Their Weekend at the Nationwide Tour’s Chattanooga Classic CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.–Chalk it up as valuable experience for Vanderbilt golfers Luke List and Mark Donnell at the Nationwide Tour’s Chattanooga Classic as the amateur duo battled the professionals through the opening two rounds of play but came up short in their bid to make the tournament’s cut. List carded a two-day total of 1-under par 143, while Donnell shot a 165. Matthew Jones (66-66) and Jason Caron (68-64) lead the event, contested on the par-72, 7,040-yard Black Creek Golf Club course in Chattanooga, Tenn., at 12-under par 132. List, a native of nearby Ringgold, Ga., closed out play on his home course at 1-under par 143 following rounds of 72-71. Following an early bogey at #2, the Vanderbilt freshman carded a four at the par-5 fourth hole and added another birdie at the par-5 sixth to improve to 1-under for the tournament. However, a bogey at #7 dropped him back to even par as List completed the front nine in 36. A string of six consecutive pars (holes #8-13) was snapped at #14 with a birdie, but a five at the par-4 15th dropped the VU rookie to even par once again. He closed out his tournament experience in style with a four on the par-5 18th to finish at -1. Mobile, Ala., native Mark Donnell, who finished second for the Commodores at the SEC Championships, opened the day at 3-over par following yesterday’s solid 75. He opened the second round on a positive note at #10 with a birdie to improve to +2 for the tournament, but an eight at the par-4 15th signaled a turn in fortune as the Vanderbilt junior struggled through a round of 90. This weekend’s experience for Donnell at the Chattanooga Classic was his first as an amateur against professional-level competition. List, Donnell and their Vanderbilt teammates now await word on a possible berth into the NCAA Regionals over May 20-22. Pre-established sites include the Yale Golf Course in New Haven, Conn. (East Regional), the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind. (Central Regional) and the Crosswater Club at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore. (West Regional). The NCAA Championships will be held in Hot Springs, Va., at the Cascades Golf Course, The Homestead, over June 1-4. List and Donnell Open Play at the Chattanooga Classic CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.–Vanderbilt freshman Luke List fired an even par 72, and Commodore junior Mark Donnell carded a first round 3-over par 75 to open play on Thursday at the Chattanooga Classic Nationwide Tour event on the par-72, 7,040-yard Black Creek Golf Club course in Chattanooga, Tenn. Michael Long and Chris Anderson currently lead the tourney at 9-under par after opening with 63’s. List, a Ringgold, Ga., native playing on his home course, opened his round (he began play on the back nine holes) with three consecutive birdies at #12, #13 and #14 to climb as high as a tie for sixth position at -3 before suffering bogeys at #16 and #18 to go out in 1-under par 35. The All-SEC First Team selection closed his up-and-down round with a 1-over par 37 on the front nine after posting three bogeys (#1, #5 and #8) and two birdies (#3 and #6). Following a stellar round of 64 at the Valley Brook Country Club to finish second out of 108 golfers in a qualifying bracket to make this weekend’s field, Donnell (Mobile, Ala.), in his first experience as an amateur in a professional level event, opened his round on the front nine at 1-under par 35. An early bogey at hole #4 was immediately corrected with a birdie at #5. A three on the par-4 ninth hole sent him to the turn at -1. The Vanderbilt junior, who finished second for the Black and Gold at the Southeastern Conference Championships over April 16-18, remained at 1-under par through 14 holes until a six at the par-4 15th and consecutive bogeys on the final two holes slightly derailed his round. He closed with a 4-over par 40 on the back nine to card the (+3) 75. The duo will tee off on Friday at 1:30 CT with live second round results posted under the Nationwide Tour link on www.pgatour.com. List will begin play on the front nine with Keith Nolan of Knoxville, Tenn., and Chad Wilfong of Thomasville, N.C., while Donnell will start his day at #10 with playing partners Elliot Gealy of Salisbury, N.C. and Randy Leen of Jupiter, Fla. |
