TULSA, Okla. – Vanderbilt sophomore Ryan Lipman was defeated in the first round of the main draw at the D’Novo/ITA Men’s All-American Championships, Thursday morning on the campus of the University of Tulsa, but came back to win his consolation first round match.
Lipman fell 6-4, 6-4 to Stanford’s Ryan Thacher, who advanced to the main draw after three consecutive wins in the qualifying draw. Thacher is currently ranked No. 59 in the Campbell’s/ITA preseason poll.
In the first round of the consolation draw, Lipman faced Akash Muppidi of Boston College, and came away with a 6-1, 6-4 victory.
“It was a tough start to the day losing my first round match,” said Lipman Thursday evening. “But I felt like I really came out ready to impose my aggressive style of play in my second match and played the way I expected myself to play and got the victory!”
Lipman is scheduled to face Steve Johnson of Southern California in the second round of the consolation bracket on Friday. Johnson defeated Wake Forest’s Tripper Carleton, 6-4, 6-2, in his first round consolation match Thursday afternoon.
