Lipman falls in finals at ITA Regionals

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – After earning five wins to advance to the finals at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships, Vanderbilt freshman Ryan Lipman had his title hopes dashed by Kentucky’s Eric Quigley on Monday.

Lipman, a Nashville native, entered his match against Quigley having not dropped a set in the tournament before losing 6-3, 6-2 in the final. The finals appearance was Lipman’s first his collegiate career.

“I think Ryan had a very good tournament,” head coach Ian Duvenhage said. “He won a number of matches against good players. It was a good event for him.”

The loss to Quigley, who is ranked 70th, dropped Lipman’s record to a team-best mark of 10-3.

Lipman also teamed with senior Vijay Paul to advance to the semifinals in doubles play, where the duo was upended by Tennessee’s team of Rhyne Williams and Boris Conkic, 8-3. Williams and Conkic went on to claim the tournament title. Despite the loss, it was a strong showing by Paul and Lipman, who had never played a college match together before the tournament.

“I thought Ryan and Vijay had a good tournament,” Duvenhage said. “They didn’t play particularly well today, but it is definitely something to build on.”

Vanderbilt will return to the courts Oct. 30 through Nov. 1 at the Alabama Invitational.
