NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After a long battle, Vanderbilt’s Ryan Lipman and Gonzales Austin defeated Mississippi State’s Jordan Angus and Malte Stropp, 8-7(9), for the SEC Fall Classic doubles championship.
The finals matched up the No. 6 doubles team in the country in Stropp and Angus against the No. 13 team in Lipman and Austin, as named by the ITA.
Early in the match each team was able to take control on their own serve, as MSU took the early 3-2 lead.
Stopp and Angus were the first to break serve and followed that by winning the next game, giving them the 5-2 lead.
It was looking like Mississippi State would run away with the match until Lipman and Austin broke the MSU serve in the 11th game to cut the Bulldog lead to 6-5.
Both teams were then able to win their serves, sending the match to a tie break.
The tie break was a good one, with each team holding three match points, but it was Lipman and Austin that were able to put it away and win the tie break 11-9.
The duo is now 9-1, between both the Southern Intercollegiate Championships and the SEC Fall Classic.
