Lea Attends Wooden Trophy Banquet Vanderbilt football player Clark Lea attended a star-studded banquet Monday at the Los Angeles Biltmore Hotel as a finalist for the 2005 John Wooden Trophy. William Betz, a swimmer from Brigham Young University, won the collegiate division Wooden Trophy while NFL star Peyton Manning won the professional athlete division. Lea, a senior fullback, was one of six finalists for the prestigious award, given to the athletes that best exemplify the ideals of legendary UCLA basketball John Wooden. The 94-year old Wooden was the banquet’s keynote speaker and presented all finalists with a plaque. The John Wooden Trophy, given in conjunction with the organization Athletes for a Better World, considered training behavior and work ethic, competitive behavior, relationships with coaches and teammates, responses to victory and defeat and contributions to society and the community.
