PRINCETON, N.J. — The ninth-ranked Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team travels to eighth-ranked Princeton on Sunday, May 11, to open NCAA Tournament play with a 12 p.m. CT game on the turf at Class of ’52 Field.
Head Coach Cathy Swezey’s Commodores are making their fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament in seven years. This season, Vanderbilt has already set a single-season record with 13 victories against only five losses.
The Commodores are 2-3 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. Vanderbilt’s two wins came in the 2004 season as the Commodores became the first team from the central time zone to advance to the national semifinals.
The 2004 NCAA Final Four featured the only previous meeting between Vanderbilt and Princeton. The Tigers defeated Vanderbilt, 11-3, at Princeton Stadium.
The 2008 Commodores are led by a strong senior class that features seven starters. Defender Sasha Cielak is a Tewaaraton nominee, attacker Margie Curran is Vanderbilt’s all-time leading scorer and goalkeeper Brooke Shinaberry is the reigning American Lacrosse Conference Goalie of the Year.
Junior Christine Casaceli leads the Tigers in scoring this season. Princeton opened the season with 12 straight wins before dropping four of its last six down the stretch.
Four Commodores have strong ties to New Jersey, including three Moorestown natives in Curran, junior Cara Giordano and Swezey. Sophomore Sarah Downing hails from Morristown, N.J.
