NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The 11th-ranked Commodore women’s lacrosse team will open the 2010 season on Sunday, February 14, playing host to No. 5 Duke at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex.

Admission to the game is free, with the game scheduled to start at 1 p.m. CT.

Head Coach Cathy Swezey’s squad returns 11 starters and a group of seven seniors from the 2009 team that earned its third straight NCAA Tournament berth.

“We are really excited to be opening up with such a big game on Sunday,” said Swezey. “Our team has had a great preseason, and they are fully prepared for the challenge of No. 5 Duke.”

Vanderbilt will be led by returning All-Americans Sarah Downing and Alex Mundy, Downing set single-season school records in 2009 for goals scored (55) and points (81), leading a high-powered offensive attack. On the other end of the field, Mundy was a defensive force for the Commodores as she led the team with 43 ground balls as well as recording 13 draw controls and 23 caused turnovers.

The Commodores will look to avenge last season’s loss to then-No. 3 Duke, a game that saw Katherine Denkler net five goals.

Sunday’s home game will be the only match at Vanderbilt for the month of February. The `Dores will next return to face Longwood at home on Wednesday, March 10.
