NEWARK, Del. – The No. 12 Vanderbilt Commodores (7-3, 1-0) picked up their sixth straight win on Saturday, defeating Delaware at Fred P. Rullo Stadium, 15-7.

Senior Carter Foote led Vanderbilt with five goals while recording two ground balls in the win. Other Commodore scorers with multiple goals were sophomore Alex Priddy (3), junior Katherine Denkler (2), and sophomore Ally Carey (2).

Senior Morgan Marino and junior Holly Burman each had two goals for the Blue Hens, who fall to 3-6 on the season.

“As a coach I was really glad to see us come out with an explosive start,” said Vanderbilt Head Coach Cathy Swezey. “After starting slow against Notre Dome, to come out and be explosive today was great. The key for us to is to find a consistent level of play.”

Vanderbilt stormed out to a 6-0 lead with Foote scoring three goals in the first five minutes of the game. Foote would add two more goals before the Commodores went into the half up 9-3.

The ‘Dores opened up the second half with four unanswered goals to extend the lead to 13-3. Sophomore Hannah Clark’s goal with 2:33 remaining gave Vanderbilt a 15-6 lead.

Carey again paced the ‘Dores defensively, finishing with nine ground balls, four caused turnovers, and two draw controls. Senior Sarah Downing had seven ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Denkler recorded with four draw controls and four ground balls, respectively.

Sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Wills was strong again for the Commodores, picking up the win with seven saves while allowing only seven goals scored.

Vanderbilt will return to conference action on Saturday, April 3, when they host Johns Hopkins at the VU Lacrosse Complex. Game time is scheduled for 1 pm CT. The Commodores won last year’s matchup 18-8 in Nashville.
