CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The No. 11 Vanderbilt lacrosse team gave the No. 4 Tar Heels their first deficit of the season on Friday night but was unable to hold on as North Carolina (2-0) put together a strong second half to win 12-6.

The Commodores (0-2) opened the game with a 3-1 lead but went into the break down 4-6. The Tar Heels reeled off six straight goals to open the second half, as Kira Cannizzaro and Emily Garrity each recorded hat tricks for North Carolina.

Sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Wills improved on her strong performance against Duke with 15 saves in Chapel Hill. “She really had a great showing tonight,” said Commodore Head Coach Cathy Swezey.

Senior Sarah Downing led the `Dores with two goals. Ally Carey, Katherine Denkler, Anastasia Adam, and Alex Priddy each added one goal. “We gave a great effort and I am really proud of how much our defense has grown,” added Swezey.

The Commodores return to action on Sunday, February 27, in Baltimore against UMBC. The `Dores were successful against UMBC with a 15-6 victory in Nashville, the first win for the 2009 season.
