NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Despite hat-tricks by senior Margie Curran and junior Cara Giordano, the 10th-ranked Commodore women’s lacrosse team fell to 18th-ranked Boston University, 17-7, Wednesday at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex.
The Terriers took control of the game early, scoring the first three goals of the contest in the opening nine minutes. Curran scored VU’s initial goal in the 13th minute, but the Commodores would not score again in the period. BU built a 12-1 halftime lead as Erica Baumgartner had four of her five assists in the opening 30 minutes.
The game may have been out of reach in the second half, but the Commodores continued to fight. Vanderbilt would tally the game’s final four goals over the last five minutes, including senior Leslie Koch’s first goal of the season off an assist from classmate Ashley Paschall, to outscore BU, 6-5, in the second half.
Sarah Dalton tallied five goals and an assist for Boston. McKinley Curro and Lauren Morton also tallied hat-tricks in the contest.
Vanderbilt did well on the draw, controlling 10 more than Boston. Giordano led all players with five, while Paschall added four and Curran had three. Defensively, senior Sasha Cielak had team-highs with four caused turnovers and two ground balls.
The Commodores remain at home for the next two weeks during a four-game homestand. Vanderbilt plays host to New Hampshire (March 15), Cornell (March 17) and Penn State (March 23) before opening American Lacrosse Conference play on the road at Northwestern.
