NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt lacrosse team suffered a hard 7-5 setback at home to the Georgetown Hoyas. With the loss, the Commodores are now 4-7 overall and 0-2 in BIG EAST action.
The player of the game for Vanderbilt was goalie Callahan Kent, who had another 10+ save outing, the junior’s seventh this season.
Georgetown struck first in Saturday’s competition, scoring in less than a minute after opening draw. In their first conference game of the season, GU took an early 4-0 lead, which the ‘Dores offense found hard to overcome. Vandy earned its first goal of the contest as Jill Doherty connected to Kelly Chandler for what would be the redshirt juniors’ first of two goals.
Using momentum, Vanderbilt began a scoring streak of its own, steadily chipping away at the Hoyas to cut their lead to one. But Georgetown managed to earn an additional goal, 5-3, before both teams headed into the locker room.
The second half of the conference matchup was riddled with turnovers on both sides, as both teams struggled to maintain possession. After nine minutes of scoreless action, Vanderbilt snapped the streak as freshman Julie Blaze sped past the GU defense to secure the Dores fourth goal of the game.
With 15:52 left, Margaret Fee connected to Alexa Kunowsky to tie the game for the first time. At 5-5 both teams began taking wide shots, fouling and causing turnovers. With the tempo and play of the match changing, Georgetown took the 6-5 lead at 13:16 after firing four shots in two minutes.
GU took advantage of a big opportunity, by earning the final goal of the night off free possession. Vanderbilt fought hard throughout the last two minutes as the Hoyas ran down the clock, but after receiving two yellow cards the ‘Dores fate was decided.
Vanderbilt looks to use its week off to regroup and focus on its next task at hand, a road competition on April 9th against the Temple Owls.
