NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Senior Sarah Downing was named the ALC Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday. The Tewaaraton Award candidate helped lead the Commodores to their seventh straight win with a 20-12 victory over ALC rival Johns Hopkins.
The New Jersey native finished with five goals, four assists, two caused turnovers, one draw control, and one ground ball in the win over the Blue Jays. Downing scored four goals within the first ten minutes of the game, giving the ‘Dores an 8-3 lead. Her final goal with 25:26 remaining extended the Vanderbilt lead to ten.
For the season, Downing leads the team with 27 goals scored and 17 assists, and is a big reason the Commodores have risen to No. 10 in the IWLCA Poll.
Downing was the ALC Offensive Player of the Week after her performance against Notre Dame in 2009. With her selection this week, she becomes the third straight Commodore to pick up ALC Offensive Player of the Week honors.
The ‘Dores will return to action on Saturday, April 10, when they host the No. 20 Ohio State Buckeyes at the VU Lacrosse Complex. Game time is schedule for 1 pm C.T.
