NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The 13th-ranked Commodore women’s lacrosse team opened the 2008 season with a 20-4 victory over Cincinnati Sunday at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex.

Sophomore Carter Foote led the prolific Commodore attack with five goals. A total of nine Vanderbilt players notched goals, including four from sophomore Sarah Downing and three from senior Margie Curran. Curran, a 2007 All-American, had a game-high three assists to total six points. Downing’s two assists also gave her six points.

Less the eight minutes into the game, Vanderbilt had opened an 8-0 lead against the Bearcats, playing their first NCAA game after adding lacrosse as a varsity sport just over 14 months ago. The Commodores took a 13-2 lead into halftime.

Downing had a tremendous all-around game, causing five UC turnovers and picking up four ground balls — both game highs. The Commodores caused 10 of Cincinnati’s 21 turnovers, and only gave the ball away nine times. Lynsey Burton and Stephanie Cox led the Bearcats with two goals each.

The Commodores head out on a mid-Atlantic road trip next weekend, traveling to face UMBC (Feb. 22) and Lehigh (Feb. 24). They then return home to play host to Duquesne (March 1) and Virginia Tech (March 4).
