Last Second Heartbreaker

Vandy falls to East Carolina off a buzzer-beater

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Riley Matthiesen scored with one second remaining to give East Carolina a 14-13 victory over Vanderbilt on Saturday afternoon at Johnson Stadium.

Vanderbilt and East Carolina opened the contest by trading goals through the first half until the end of the second period when the Pirates would score five unanswered to take a 10-6 lead into the break. Vandy held ECU scoreless throughout the third to even the score at 10 heading into the final period. The two teams traded goals until Vandy extended its lead with four minutes remaining off a goal from Nancy Halleron. The Pirates scored three straight in the final three minutes of the contest, including the game-winner with one second remaining to seal the win.

Vanderbilt (6-8, 2-3 AAC) had seven scorers on the day, led by Halleron who scored four goals to register her seventh hat trick of the year. Jaime Biskup tallied three goals, marking 12 games this season with multiple scores. Freshman Bailey Lower made her first career start in black and goal, picking up a career-best nine draw controls and added a goal off her first collegiate free position. Elise Bialecki had a team-high four ground balls while Amiyah Turner caused a game-high tying three turnovers.

East Carolina (5-8, 3-1 AAC) were led by Leah Bestany who registered five points off four goals and an assist. Erin Gulden tallied a hat trick and Emma Magazu picked up a game-high five ground balls.

The Dores return to action on Wednesday when they visit Lindenwood. The opening draw is slated for noon and can be seen on ESPN+.
