The Place: Fresno State Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium, Fresno, CA

Vanderbilt lacrosse hit the road last Sunday for their season-opener, earning an 18-14 win over Kennesaw State. The Commodores’ second game of the season will take them further from home, as Vanderbilt visits Fresno State on Monday afternoon at 4 p.m.
The Commodores (1-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) head into this matchup with the Bulldogs (1-1, 0-0 MPSF) looking to start 2-0 for the third time in the past four years.
“The more winning you do early, the better it is for the rest of your season,” Vanderbilt head coach Cathy Swezey said. “Anytime you can get your team on a winning track and get to the point where your team expects to win versus hoping to win, it’s an important thing.”
Kayla Peterson scored five goals and Julie Blaze had six points in Vanderbilt’s win over Kennesaw State last Sunday. The Commodores did not trail in the game, and Blaze was named BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week for the first time in her career.
“Julie’s just a prolific scorer,” Swezey said. “She’s one of the better shooters on our team and she’s a midfielder. I think that really allows her to accomplish a lot. If you watch her, you can see that she has great speed. The thing you don’t know from watching is how much effort and work she puts in to being the player she is.”
Vanderbilt has not yet named a starting goalkeeper for Monday’s game. Redshirt sophomore Lily Argyle played all 60 minutes in goal against Kennesaw, making four saves.
The Commodores controlled the majority of possession and outshot the Owls in the game, 41-26, but still needed a string of late goals to pull away for the win. In response, Vanderbilt’s coaching staff stressed defensive responsibility this week.
“The primary focus for this week of practice was our defensive transition,” Swezey said. “Just making sure our midfielders get to the proper spaces and pick up their man.”
Opening draw is at 4 p.m. CT on President’s Day from Fresno. The game will be broadcast online at FloSports.tv.

Furlong scored her first collegiate goal in the first half, and took three shots. Fellow freshman Fornia assisted on Furlong’s goal and registered three assists and six shots in her first college game. Hawkins recorded three ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Gearhardt took one shot.
