NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Six prep standouts from the Mid-Atlantic have chosen Vanderbilt University and will play women’s lacrosse for the Commodores, Head Coach Cathy Swezey announced Thursday.

Katherine Denkler (Alexandria, Va.), Emily Franke (Baltimore, Md.), Claire Leonard (Bethesda, Md.), Catherine Mitchell (Millersville, Md.), Erin O’Donovan (Annapolis, Md.) and Meghan Rose (Poolesville, Md.) will enroll at Vanderbilt next fall and play their first varsity season in 2008.

“We are very excited about the class of 2011,” Swezey said. “This is an extremely diverse class and we are encouraged by the new range of experience and talent that they will bring to the program.”

The recruiting class includes a pair of U.S. Lacrosse Academic All-Americans and numerous local honors. Each member of the class has showcased her talent with the nation’s top lacrosse teams.

Coach Swezey reunited teammates by inviting two student-athletes to Nashville. Mitchell, a midfielder, attends Severna Park, the same school that produced Commodore goalkeeper Brooke Shinaberry as well as 2006 graduate Kate Hickman. Denkler, an attacker, goes to St. Stephens & St. Agnes, where current VU freshman Carter Foote prepped.

Leonard, the lone defender of the group, preps at Holton-Arms School. The class also includes three more versatile midfielders in Franke (Towson High School), O’Donovan (Saint Mary’s) and Rose (Poolesville High).

“We are certain that this group has the potential to help us reach another Final Four and will move us closer to a National Championship,” Swezey added. “We look forward to their arrival next fall.”
