NASHVILLE – The 11th-ranked Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team dropped a 17-6 decision Sunday to second-ranked Northwestern at the VU Lacrosse Complex Sunday.
Senior Emily Franke and junior Kendall Pittinger each scored a pair of goals to lead the Commodore attack. Franke is now tied for the team lead in goals with senior Katherine Denkler (eight) and the team lead in points with junior Courtney Kirk (13).
Franke put the Commodores on the board first in the fifth minute on an eight-meter shot. The Wildcats would tie the score at 1-1 four minutes later. NU would then tally three straight before Kirk scored to bring VU back within two at 4-2.
The Wildcats ended the half with three goals to take a 7-2 lead into the break. After the Commodores scored first again in the second half, Northwestern had seven straight goals to put the game away.
Vanderbilt goalkeeper Natalie Wills made eight saves on the day. Junior All-American Ally Carey had a game-high six draw controls to strengthen her hold on the team lead in that category.
Erin Fitzgerald and Amanda Macaluso each notched hat-tricks. A total of 10 Wildcats scored on the day.
The Commodores will close out a four-game homestand on Wednesday, March 2, playing host to Cincinnati at 3 p.m. CT.
Admission to all home lacrosse games this season is free. The VU Lacrosse Complex is located at the corner of 25th Avenue and Jess Neely Drive, behind the Currey Tennis Center. Parking is available in the 25th Avenue Garage.
