Lacrosse Defeats Ohio, 9-6

ATHENS, Ohio — The Vanderbilt lacrosse team captured its second consecutive American Lacrosse Conference victory with a 9-6 win over Ohio University Friday at Peggy Pruitt Field.

Freshmen Margie Curran led the Commodores with three goals on the day. Junior Kate Hickman and sophomores Nicole Pugno and Jennifer Tapscott had two goals each.

OU’s Dana Dobbie, the nation’s leader in draw controls, scored four goals and added two assists, contibuting on all six Ohio goals. But the Bobcats’ attack was stalled when the play could not run through Dobbie, and VU freshman defender Sasha Cielak came up with four caused turnovers and four ground balls to get Ohio out of rhythm.

The game was even in the first half, as the teams traded pairs of goals to a 4-4 halftime tie. The Commodore came run came in the middle of the second half. After goals from VU’s Tapscott and OU’s Dobbie, Vanderbilt went on a 3-0 run while holding the Bobcats scoreless for 16 minutes. Curran had two goals and an assist during the VU surge.

The ‘Cats got within two goals in the 51st minute, but an insurance goal from Tapscott and good clock management secured the Commodore victory.
 
Senior goalkeeper Ashey Bastinelli made six saves on the day for the Commodores, while the Bobcats’ Jen Heup had 11 saves.

The Commodores (5-6, 2-2 ALC) travel to Columbus for a Sunday matchup against the Ohio State Buckeyes.
