BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. — Vanderbilt’s Auston Kim and Celina Sattelkau each fired a 2-under-par Monday and helped the Commodores finish their opening round inside the top 10 at the Gamecock Intercollegiate.
Kim, a junior, and Sattelkau, a sophomore, both finished with a 70 and are each tied for seventh after first-round play at the Columbia Country Cub. The pair sits just one-stroke back of three golfers for the individual lead.
As a team, Vanderbilt is in eighth place after it carded a 291, 3-over-par and is nine shots back of overall leader Duke (-6). Morgan Baxendale was 3-over-par and is tied for 47th while Virginie Ding is tied for 61st with a 4-over-par.
Louise Yu (tied for 79th) is 6-over-par while Ariel Yu, playing as an individual, shot a 2-over-par and is tied for 35th.
“I thought the girls showed a lot of fight and toughness today after a rough start in some really tough conditions,” Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen said. “We really had it going midway through the round.
“Celina and Auston carried us today for sure and I’m looking for the other three to step up Tuesday.”
The Gamecock Intercollegiate’s second round is now scheduled to begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Tuesday. The tournament’s third round will start following the second round Tuesday due to the threat of inclement weather.
If the event cannot be completed Wednesday due to poor weather conditions the tournament champion will be decided via the leader after 36 holes.
