BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –Junior midfielder Katie Schulz was recently named a preseason All-Southeastern Conference selection by the league coaches.

Schulz was a first-team All-SEC honoree and National Soccer Coaches Association All-Central Region pick a year ago after scoring two goals with three assists. She was a main figure in the VU defensive front that notched nine shutouts in 2006.

“Katie has matured during her time in the program and I believe she has become more confident as a leader,” said head coach Ronnie Coveleskie. “I think you are going to see Katie touching the ball much more this year in the midfield and she will be a major contributor to our attack, as opposed to a more defensive role in her first two years.”

The league coaches also picked Vanderbilt to finish third in the SEC East behind Florida and Tennessee. The Commodores did receive one first-place vote as well.

VU fell 2-0 to Virginia Tech in an exhibition contest last Friday and will open the regular season this Friday, Aug. 31 against Wisconsin at 3:30 p.m. at the Nike Invitational in Athens, Ga.
