ATHENS, Ga. — Vanderbilt men’s tennis senior Charlie Jones saw his collegiate career come to an end in the first round of the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championship, falling to USC’s Daniel Nguyen in three sets (0-6, 6-3, 3-6).
After dropping the first set, 6-0, to Nguyen, who justhelped the Trojans to their fourth-straight NCAA title, Jones did not go down without a fight.
Jones came back to win the second set, 6-3, before falling in the third, 6-3.
Jones’ Vanderbilt career comes to an end after being the first Commodore to appear in the singles tournament since 2010. Jones went 14-9 at number one singles this year, helping Vanderbilt to it’s fifth NCAA Tournament bid in six seasons.
Nguyen advances to the second round where he will face either Duke’s Henrique Cunha or UCLA’s Adrien Puget.
