TULSA, Okla. – Charlie Jones and Gonzales Austin won difficult first matches in the 2011 ITA Men’s All-American Championships qualifying round in singles to advance in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
“The first day of any tournament is always tough to get used to the conditions,” said assistant coach Jamie Hunt, “but we did a better job than our opponents of that today. Charlie and AJ would be the first to say they didn’t play their best, but they found a way to get the job done and move on and that’s what matters.”
Jones won his first match, coming back after losing his first set 2-6 to win 6-3, 6-2. Austin also won his first round match 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Jones will face South Alabama’s Romain Bocaert, and Austin moves on to play Auburn’s Alex Stamchev at 8:00 C.T.
The two athletes received a bye in doubles play, and play BYU’s Francis Sargeant and Spencer Smith at 2:30 C.T.
